During my NYU ITP Research Residency, I collaborated with Dan Shiffman to build an initial working prototype of a "Lesson Recording System". Here is a video I made to help explain how the system works.
Technically speaking, we leveraged a range of off-the-shelf hardware and software including:
- Wirecast Software for the live video editing and compositing
- Intensity Pro BlackMagic Cards to help with live HDMI video capture
- Canon 5D cameras with prime lenses for a high-resolution fixed-depth image. These cameras were a bit challenging to work with due to a number of their default features. We leveraged the Magic Lantern firmware to deal with some of these issues.
A big factor in the design and implementation of the system was to eliminate the need for any post-production work. This would allow Dan, and anyone else, to utilize the system to produce content. system quickly, easily, and affordably. Interestingly, to help stay connected and focused on the viewer, Dan taped pictures of NYU ITP students on the wall around both cameras. Dan still uses this system today and actively posts video through his Youtube Account.
